The injection of cryogenic deuterium pellets into tokamak plasmas is not only one of the most elaborated fuelling methods, but also used for edge plasma control by ELM triggering. In the study of pellet-plasma interaction it is of primary importance to determine the dependence of the trajectory and penetration depth of the ablating pellet on the plasma and pellet parameters (mainly on pellet velocity, pellet mass and plasma electron temperature), which can be then compared with model calculations. At ASDEX Upgrade, pellet trajectory and penetration depth are determined using fast digital CCD cameras. The images of ablating pellets obtained for different plasma and pellet parameters will be analysed; these results will be contrasted against time of flight measurements, extending the ASDEX Upgrade High Field Side database for pellet ablation. Our investigations aim at finding a scaling (either empirical or model-based) helping us to predict pellet ablation and penetration depth for future tokamak experiments.
