The High Energy Stereoscopic System H.E.S.S. — •German Hermann — Max-Planck-Institut f. Kernphysik
The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is an array of 4 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, dedicated to the search for cosmic sources of gamma radiation at energies above ∼100 GeV. Its large field of view of about 5 deg, its angular resolution of 0.1 deg and its unprecedented flux sensitivity of 1 % of the Crab in 25 h make it ideal for the investigation of point like sources and for morphological studies of extended sources. The experiment has been fully operational since December 2003 and has detected a large number of new astrophysical sources. I will give an overview of the H.E.S.S. system and its observational status, and highlight some of the recent results.
