Electron sources for the monitorspektrometer of KATRIN — •Jaromir Kaspar — Nuclear Physics Institute Rez near Prague
The stability and absolute value of the high voltage used for the energy analysis is of utmost importance for the MAC-E filter spectrometer of KATRIN. For calibration and monitoring without interfering with the data taking of KATRIN a monitor spectrometer will be installed operating with the KATRIN high voltage. The calibration sources will biased by a potential at the source to operate at the same transmission point as the main spectrometer. The monitor spectrometer will be the modified Mainz set up with dedicated sources. We report about the performance of two sources Am/Co and Rb/Kr. The Am/Co source, a strong source of 241Am covered with a thin Co foil emits photo electrons from K shell ionisation at an energy of ~18,6keV. The line is extremely narrow and reproducible as the Co foil can be cleaned in situ. An alternative source with higher intensity is the Rb/Kr source with 83Rb decaying into 83mKr. The electron conversion lines of the daughter are used for calibration as in the Mainz set up. The advantage is the long half-life given by the mother isotope, the disadvantage of an additional background from Kr losses can be tolerated in the monitor spectrometer. Sponsored by BMBF 05 CK1UM1/5
