Inflation with a step — •Jan Hamann1, Laura Covi1, Alessandro Melchiorri2, and Irene Sorbera21DESY Theory Group, Notkestr. 85, 22607 Hamburg — 2Dipartimento di Fisica, Universita di Roma La Sapienza, Roma, Italy

If inflation takes place in a "landscape" of scalar fields, it is quite likely that the effective potential along the trajectory of the inflaton field displays certain features, such as steps, i.e. sudden changes in the mass, caused by phase transitions of fields which couple to the inflaton. In Ref.[1] it was shown that these features can have a sizable impact on the spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations. We discuss the effect of such features on observable quantities and use CMB and LSS data to find constraints on their presence.
