Current experiments in astroparticle physics, like the MAGIC telescope, require photodetectors with high quantum efficiency in order to lower the energy threshold of the telescope. A candidate of a novel photodetector for the MAGIC telescope is the avalanche drift diode. It combines the principle of a drift diode and a silicon photomultiplier. Back illumination and a homogeneous entrance window provide a fill factor of 1. Therefore, the development of avalanche drift diodes is very promising to achieve a quantum efficiency close to 100 % in a wavelength region of 300 - 600 nm and may thus be superior to conventional photomultiplier tubes. In order to firstly evaluate the properties of the avalanche region of the avalanche drift diode, a series of test structures is produced at the MPI Semiconductor Laboratory as a R&D project. The principle of operation of an avalanche drift diode will be described, preliminary results based on simulations will be presented and a summary on the status of the test structures will be given.
