Development status of High-QE HPDs with an 18-mm GaAsP photocathode for IACTs — •Jelena Ninković, Masaaki Hayashida, Razmik Mirzoyan, and Masahiro Teshima — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, Föhringer Ring 6, 80805 Munich, Germany
The Hybrid Photon Detector (HPD) has been developed over several years in collaboration with the Hamamatsu Photonics with the aim to lower the energy threshold of the MAGIC project. The quantum efficiency (QE) of the 18-mm diameter GaAsP photocathode can be as high as 50% at the peak wavelength of around 500nm. Use of the wavelength shifting technique allows one to enhance further the UV-sensitivity. Application of these HPDs can be seen as an equivalent increase of the reflector diameter of the MAGIC telescope from 17m to 24m. Our measurement results indicate that the GaAsP photocathode is expected to have a sufficiently long lifetime to survive adverse effects due to the starlight and light of night sky in long-term operation. In this presentation we will report the current status of the above mentioned type HPDs.
