The use of conventional photomultipliers in all major high energy astrophysics experiments is presently limiting the sensitivity of the experiments. Since a few years several parallel activities in Russia, as for example the front illuminated SiPM developed by the group of Prof. Dolgoshein together with a team from MPI fuer Physik in Munich. are developing a novel sensor, the so-called SiPM, to detect photons in the visible spectrum. These new photodetectors can be operated at low bias, with large gain and are completely insensitive to magnetic fields. At the present stage their photon detection efficiencies (PDE) approaches that of bialkali photomultipliers. Recently new approach is being developed, within the semiconductor laboratory (HLL) of the Max Planck Society, a back-illuminated avalanche drift detectors. The quantum efficiency of these devices is expected to be as high as 80%. A study of possible applications of these devices in the IACTs will be presented.
