Studies of Missing Transverse Energy in Searches for Supersymmetry in ATLAS — •Robindra Prabhu, Klaus Desch, and Peter Wienemann — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Freiburg, Hermann-Herder-Str. 3, 79104 Freiburg

Missing transverse energy (ETmiss) is an important signature for R-parity conserving supersymmetry (SUSY) and conseqently a key observable for SUSY discovery in ATLAS. With squarks and gluinos being strongly produced, SUSY cross sections at the LHC are expected to be sufficiently large to enable an early discovery. This however requires an excellent experimental understanding of ETmiss for all background processes.

With the large QCD cross sections at the LHC, methods need to be developed to ensure good statistics of simulated events across the full kinematic range. To this end a filter is being developed to properly evaluate the impact of real and fake ETmiss from QCD jets on inclusive SUSY searches in ATLAS.
