When aligning the 17m diameter MAGIC telescope to a gamma ray burst (GRB), the telescope is slewing at an angular velocity of approximately 180deg/50s. Since a typical GRB lasts only a few seconds, a higher velocity is needed for follow-up observations of GRBs. We will give a short introduction on the statics and dynamics of the 60 ton instrument, and we will present our work on the optimization of the control loop of the drive system to achieve a fast movement.
