Thermal conductivity of gases from power-dependent Raman spectroscopy on silicon nanowires — •Harald Scheel1, Stephanie Reich2, Carola Nisse1, and Christian Thomsen11Institut für Festkörperphysik, Technische Universität Berlin, 10623 Berlin, Germany — 2Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139-4307

The Raman spectra of silicon nanowires are studied as a function of laser excitation power and the molar mass of surrounding gases. We find that the thermal conductivity of a gas determines the nanowire temperature, which can be detected by a change in the Raman frequency. We can thus distinguish different gases by their thermal conductivities.
