We studied the influence of the work function change of a polymer substrate by electrochemical treatments on the energy level alignment in layered systems using core and valence level photoemission spectroscopy. As example for a technically relevant organic/organic interfaces we chose the interface between PEDOT:PSS [mixture of poly-3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene (PEDOT) and polystyrenesulfonate (PSS)] and CuPc (copper phthalocyanine). The change of the work function by about 0.75 eV affects the interface dipole whereas the barrier between HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) and Fermi level remains constant.
