The surface of C60/Au(111) film has been studied with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) during layer-by-layer growth. From the first to the fourth layer, the growth behavior, the effect of annealing, and the electrical property of each layer were investigated. Due to the charge transfer from the Au(111) substrate, the first layer showed big difference from the other layers. We could estimate the relative intensity of the molecular interaction at each layer qualitatively. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy performed on each different layer showed the change of the electronic states with film thickness. The substrate-induced effect vanished at the fourth layer.
