A sensitive tool to study the lattice and electronic system of thin solid films are surface acoustic waves (SAW) generated on a piezoelectric substrate on which the material of interest is attached. By electron-beam evaporation a V2O3 film was deposited onto piezoelectric LiNbO3. To investigate the metal-to-insulator (MI) transition surface acoustic wave studies were performed in a temperature range from 260K to 10K. The attenuation becomes maximal at the MI-transition and shows a hysteresis not only of electronic nature. The sound velocity change reveals a precursor of the MI-transition of V2O3 [1], which can also be detected in the attenuation using a self-retuning SAW delay line.
