The knowledge of the double differential cross section (DDCS) for the low energy electron emission after passage of swift heavy ions through condensed matter is an ingredient of a conformal modeling of the radiotherapy plans with C12 ions at GSI. We initiated an extended investigation of the low energy electron emission induced by swift heavy ion impact on thin solid foils. Yields of low energy electrons (from 0 up to 1000eV) emitted from the foils after heavy ion impact between 0 and ± 180 with respect to the beam axis are energy and angle analyzed with a toroidal electrostatic electron spectrometer. From energy shift, broadening and attenuation of the Auger electron peak, transport properties from the ion track to the surface in solid state targets are derived. This facilitates Monte Carlo methods to derive the DDCS for the electron emission. A wide range of materials with different Z and different densities is used as solid state targets in order to assess the influence of free electron density etc. on low energy electron emission. For arriving at reliable scaling of DDCS a sequence of projectiles with a range of Z between C up to U and energies between 3.6 and 15 AMeV from UNILAC GSI will be used. First results with 3.6 AMeV C2+ are presented.
