Chaotic scattering of electrons by Hydrogen — •I.A. Yastremsky and J.M. Rost — Max-Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems, Dresden

The irregular fluctuations in cross section (Ericson fluctuations) are known to exist in many phycical systems when the mean energy spacing D between resonances becomes much less than their typical width Γ [1-3]. The theory of Ericson fluctuations has been developed for systems with short range forces [1, 3]. Here we have investigated the chaotic scattering of electron on Hydrogen (long range forces) when the total energy E is close to the double-ionization threshold semiclassically. We shall demonstrate that the semiclassical autocorrelation function c(Δ) = ⟨ S(E)*S(E+Δ)⟩ for the S - matrix has not the standard Lorentzian shape as predicted in [1, 3] for the systems with short range forces. This behavior is due to the fact that the dynamic of H - is neither fully chaotic nor regular.
