Fast electrons from laser-irradiated atomic clusters — •Md. Ranaul Islam, Ulf Saalmann, and Jan-Michael Rost — MPIPKS, Nöthnitzer Straße 38, 01187 Dresden , Germany
Experiments with atomic clusters subjected to intense laser radiation have shown a very effective energy absorption followed by a complete disintegration of the clusters into fast (keV$∖ldots$MeV) ionic fragments. Aside, fast (keV) electrons and X-ray photon have been measured. By means of microscopic calculations for xenon clusters of sizes from 10$^2$ up to 10$^4$ atoms we study the mechanism behind the electron heating leading to fast ionized electrons as well as to the creation of core holes by electron-impact ionization (and subsequent X-ray emission). We will show that the laser-cluster interaction allows to accelerate electrons to energies much higher than the ponderomotive energy of the driving laser.
