The angular distribution of the argon 3p photo–electron has been observed recently with high resolution in the 90–330 eV photon energy region by using linear polarized synchrotron radiation [1]. In these measurements, emphasis was placed in particular on the 2p5 4s and 2p5 3d J = 1 resonances which are known to overlap partially and which makes it necessary to describe the photo–electron emission as a resonant process, including the direct photoionization as well as the excitation–ionization via resonantly excited bound states in the continuum.
In this contribution, a detailed comparison is made between recent measurements and accurate multiconfiguration Dirac–Fock computations [2]. Although most of the atomic amplitudes are energy independent, if considered over the region of the resonances, it will be shown and discussed how the coherent superposition of the excitation and decay processes may lead to either a constructive or destructive interference in the angular distributions and intensities of the observed photon lines.
