Electrostatic ion beam traps allow to store and observe ionic atomic clusters over period of times which are longer than their natural internal cooling times. Contrary to Paul- or Penning traps it is possible to detect neutral fragments and reaction products likewise in storage rings. Using en electrostatic ion beam trap, we have performed experiments where the electron impact neutralization cross section of small (1 to ~10 atoms) negatively charged aluminum and silver clusters is measured. Additionally, we have measured the cooling times of these species, and found signatures of thermionic, evaporative and radiative cooling for several species.
