Multipass amplification of chirped ultrashort pulses in an all-diode-pumped Yb:glass amplifier to 8 Joule. — •Sebastian Podleska, Joachim Hein, Mathias Siebold, Ragnar Bödefeld, Marko Hornung, Mathias Schnepp, Gabriela Paunescu, Marko Hellwing, and Roland Sauerbrey — Institute for Optics and Quantum Electronics, FSU Jena, Max-Wien-Platz 1, D-07743 Jena, Germany

An increasing number of applications and experiments in the field of light-matter interaction demand ultra high peak power in the order of a petawatt. The POLARIS project aims the development of an all-diode-pumped, high energy and high peak power femtosecond laser system at a reasonable repetition rate of several shots per minute. The amplification of stretched fs-pulses to 8 J was currently achieved in a chain of four amplifiers. As the active medium Yb3+-doped fluoride phosphate glass with a fluorescence lifetime of 1.4 ms was chosen. It is longitudinally pumped at 940 nm by 1000 laser diode bars in pulsed operation. In the fourth amplification stage a pump power of 100 kW is imaged homogeneously to a beam cross section of 2.5 cm2. Applying thermal lens correction techniques the laser pulse extracts its energy in a 10-pass scheme. The compression of the amplified pulses in a tiled grating compressor was shown.
