Metallic optical nanostructures are believed to be the key for tailoring the dispersion relation of light in an artificial kind of matter, frequently termed optical metamaterials [1,2]. The desired material properties can be achieved by controlling the resonances associated with a single nanostructure.
In this contribution we investigate the electromagnetic properties of nanorods, consisting of a pair of gold nanowires and a PMMA spacing [3]. Transmission and reflection spectra have been measured in amplitude and phase. In all cases rigorous diffraction theory is used to compare experimental with theoretical results. By changing the geometry of the nanorods the electric and magnetic resonances can be independently tuned. This approach is applied to engineer the negative index behavior of the metamaterial.
