Microspheres (MSs) are optical resonators with unprecedented high Q-factors [1], [2] that leads to a low threshold of nonlinear effects [3]. In the presented contribution, the dependence of the resonance bandwidth and back reflection on the coupled power has been investigated in a number of experimental realizations. An EDFA (Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier) based laser with a microsphere mirror was demonstrated. A theoretical model based on two coupled counter propagating MS modes and Kerr nonlinearity was used to simulate the properties of the MSs.
