It was found that the periodic arrangement of gold nanostructures on top of a dielectric waveguide layer leads to strong coupling of particle plasmons and quasiguided modes [1]. In this work we present the influence of positional disorder of the nanostructures on the optical properties of such systems. We introduce artificial disorder with correlated and uncorreated next-neighbor positions. The models are characterized by a Fourier analysis of the spatial arrangement of the nanostructures. Both disorder types strongly modify the optical properties of such metallic photonic crystal slabs. However, substantially different behaviors regarding the linear optical properties and the bandstructure occur. Whereas uncorrelated disorder only reduces the coupling strength, correlated disorder additionally broadens the resonances inhomogeneously due to the excitation of multiple quasiguided modes [2]. A straightforward theory derived from diffraction experiments reveals nice agreement with the experimental observations.
