Analysis of Metamaterials using Equivalent Circuit Theory — •Liwei Fu, Heinz Schweizer, Hongcang Guo, Na Liu, and Harald Giessen — Pfaffenwaldring 57, D-70550 Stuttgart

Transmission line (TL) theory is a powerful analysis and design tool for metamaterials. Based on some simplified equivalent circuits, the scattering parameters in the TL can be calculated. The material parameters of complex permittivity and permeability can be retrieved, and one can gain an immediate insight into the fundamental characteristics of the metamaterial system.

In this report, we approach the analysis of metamaterials in the near infrared region using equivalent TL theory. It turns out that the electromagnetic resonances of cut wires [1] can be equivalent to those of a combination of shunt or series L, C, and R circuit in TL. The parameters were obtained by fitting the experimental transmission and reflection curves of the cut wires. Using the circuit parameters as a function of the wire dimensions, physical insight into the structure can therefore be gained. Further analysis about the origin of L, C, and R is given through field distribution theory. The spectral phase behavior and the retrieved material parameters through TL are compared with the results from FIT simulations using CST microwave studio.
