A radio-frequency field can be used to couple the hyperfine-sublevels of magnetically trapped atoms. In certain parameter regimes the atomic motion can then considered to be subjected to a so-called dressed adiabatic potential. We present the underlying theory and explore potential applications in atom optics and quantum information. We will point out the versatility and flexibility of this new class of potentials and demonstrate how they can be used to build atom optical elements such as double-wells, interferometers and ringtraps. In particular we point out how these elements can be realized in an integrated fashion on atom chips.
