Self-starting, few-cycle pulses from a Kerr-lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser employing quasi-synchronous pumping with a mode-locked ps laser are shown. Within a detuning range on the order of +/- 5 microns self-starting is triggered by the small, periodic gain modulation induced by the mode-locked ps pulses. Besides self-starting, synchronous pumping enables the realization of an attractive and economically viable system, simultaneously delivering timing controlled few-cycle fs pulses, and near IR and visible ps pulses. Applications include two-color pump-probe spectroscopy and optical frequency metrology. In our experiments, a frequency-doubled Nd:Vanadate laser at 532 nm (quasi-) synchronously pumps a broadband Ti:sapphire oscillator. We observe reliable and fast self-starting behavior for octave-spanning optical bandwidths, 6 fs pulses and also for longer pulses in the 100 fs regime. Besides the observed self-starting, utilizing a mode-locked pump laser does not reveal any difference in comparison to CW pumping and we measured a clean and unperturbed pulse train using an autocorrelator. When the repetition frequencies are manually adjusted to be equal, no modulation in the output power is observed, otherwise the optical output of the Ti:sapphire is modulated with the difference frequency of the repetition rates of both lasers on the order of -30dBc.
