Quantum degenerate mixture of fermionic Lithium and bosonic Rubidium gases — •B. Deh, C. Marzok, C. Silber, S. Günther, C. Zimmermann, and Ph. W. Courteille — Physikalisches Institut der Universität Tübingen

Quantum degenenerate mixtures have become a starting point towards new experiments in the field of ultracold atoms, such as the observation of the BEC-BCS crossover and the production of heteronuclear molecules. The key to such mixtures is sympathetic cooling of Fermions by a bosonic agent. We report on the cooling of 6Li by thermally coupling it to an evaporatively cooled gas of 87Rb. From measurements of the thermalization time, we were able to estimate the interspecies s-wave triplet scattering length. The cooling scheme led to a mixture of both species, where the Rubidium cloud is colder than the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation, and the Lithium is colder than the Fermi temperature. Our next project will be the search for interspecies Feshbach resonances
