Collective Dynamics in Coupled Josephson Junctions — •Reinhold Walser, Oliver Crasser, Karl Vogel, and Wolfgang P. Schleich — Abteilung Quantenphysik, Universität Ulm, Germany
Phase coherent coupled systems appear through out general physics. From the pendulum chain of classical mechanics [1] to Josephson junction arrays in solid state physics [2,3] and Bose-Einstein condensates [4], one does find the same phenomenology described by the well known sine-Gordon equation.
In this contribution, first, we present a simple mean-field picture of the dynamics of a coupled Josephson junction. Second, we will extend these principles to an examination of the effects of quantum fluctuations. In particular, we will compare two approaches to macroscopic quantum tunneling between two classically distinguishable and energetically degenerate field configurations. Possible applications to atomic Bose-Einstein condensates are discussed.
