Engineering the dynamics of ultracold atoms in optical lattices using Bloch-Zener oscillations — •Bernhard Breid, Timo Hartmann, Dirk Witthaut, and Hans Jürgen Korsch — TU Kaiserslautern, FB Physik, D-67653 Kaiserslautern

We present theoretical and numerical results on the dynamics of ultracold atoms in an accelerated double-periodic optical lattice. Due to a second shallow lattice the ground band splits into two subbands. The dynamics in such systems is dominated by the interplay between Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling between the subbands. This permits various interesting applications, such as widely tunable matter wave beam splitters and fast directed transport. A complete reconstruction in one band offers the possibility to construct a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We discuss the conditions for this complete reconstruction and present possible applications.
