Trapped ions in equilibrium arrange themselves in ordered structures known as Coulomb crystals. In the case of Penning traps, ions can be confined in a single plane, and form a triangular lattice. Since a large number of ions can be confined in this experimental set-up, 2D Coulomb crystals in Penning traps are a naturally scalable system for quantum information processing with ions.

In this work we present the following results: (i) Quantum gates can be implemented between nearest ions in Penning traps by coupling internal states to the axial (perpendicular to the plane) motion. (ii) In a realistic range of parameters, the coupling with other vibrational degrees of freedom induces and error in the gate, which, however, is below the limit for fault tolerant quantum computation. (iii) Ions in a Penning trap also allow us to peform quantum simulations of spin models in a triangular lattices, which offers us unique possibilities for studying many-body effects, like quantum frustration and quantum phase transitions in 2D.
