We build a new experimental set-up to study photoabsorption and nonlinear optical processes of molecules in the gas phase, which are liquid or solid at room temperature. The main idea is to use a hollow waveguide, which is heated. The long and well defined interaction zone of the waveguide enables very sensitive detection of nonlinear optical effects as well as linear absorption. As a first test we have studied the influence of H2O as well as D2O vapour pressure on the frequency spectrum of 27 fs laser pulses at 800 nm. The nonlinear refractive index of water has been estimated from the observed spectral broadening. It was found to be of the same order of magnitude as values for N2 and O2 given in the literature. The proposed method can give new and complementary information on photoinduced dynamics in molecules.
