We are developing a miniaturized atomic clock based on atom chip technology. It will employ the transition between the |F=1,m=−1⟩ and |F=2,m=1⟩ hyperfine sublevels of the 87Rb ground state as its frequency reference. This frequency will be interrogated using a two-photon, microwave and RF excitation scheme

Compared to fountain clocks, two design decisions will miniaturize the setup:
The ultracold atoms will be held in a magnetic trap above the atom chip during interrogation.
The excitation pulses will be generated by a microwave stripline integrated on the chip.
We expect the clock stability to be close to 1 · 10−13 s1/2τ−1/2. It would thus outperform today’s best commercial atomic clocks by a factor of 10, while being much smaller tha the atomic fountain primary standards. This combination of features opens a clear perspective for applications as secondary standard and in satellite navigation.

In this poster, we present the calculations leading to this expectation as well as an outline of our planned design.
