Tomographic DOAS measurements of 2D trace gas distributions above the city centre of Heidelberg, Germany — •Denis Poehler, Andreas Hartl, and Ulrich Platt — Institute of Environmental Physics, University of Heidelberg, Germany
Longpath DOAS tomography allows 2 and 3 dimensional measurements of trace gas distributions by measuring the average concentration of different trace gases along 10 to 20 light paths and using tomographic reconstruction techniques to retrieve spacial information’s of the distribution.
With a measurement setup of three Multibeam Longpath DOAS instruments and 20 retro arrays the light paths cover an area of 4 * 4 km2 above the city centre of Heidelberg. Each instrument measures along 4 light paths simultaneously and allow retrieving average concentrations of the trace gases NO2, SO2, O3, HCHO, and HONO. For our setup, a measurement cycle for all light paths takes less than 10 minutes. So far measurements of all instruments and along all light paths could be realized for limited time periods and in principle allow 2 dimensional reconstruction of trace gas distributions. With further simultaneous measurements for longer time periods, time series of the trace gas distribution will be reconstructed.
