Accurate knowledge of the variability of atmospheric water vapour in space and time is of fundamental importance for a better understanding of the Earth’s energy and hydrological cycles. For the measurement of the 4-d water vapour field with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution a project for the development of a water vapour differential absorption lidar (DIAL) has been initiated. Goal is a mobile lidar which permits a 360∘ scan within 1 minute and which provides water vapour profiles through the whole troposphere. The system is currently being developed by a consortium of universities and scientific institutes in Germany. It is planned to deploy the system for the first time within the international field campaign Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study (COPS) in south-western Germany and eastern France in the summer of 2007. We will present a survey of the system, describe the main parts and their parameters and explain the development status.
