Investigation of dust formation in an Ar-He-C2H2 discharge — •Angelo Consoli, Jan Benedikt, and Achim von Keudell — Arbeitsgruppe Reaktive Plasmen, Ruhr-Universtiät Bochum, Universitätsstr. 150, 44780 Bochum Germany
The neutral products of a radio frequency argon-helium-acetylene plasma, which is used to produce carbon nanoparticles, are investigated by means of time resolved mass spectrometry. A detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis of the resulting spectra is performed using Bayes statistics and calibration measurements. Possible pathways for the dust production are discussed. The main paths for dust production are believed to be the formation of C2nH2 by successive reaction of C2H2 with a C2H-radical and the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results of this work are compared with a recent model calculation by de Bleecker1 of a commensurable plasma. In contrast to the predictions by the model significant differences regarding PAHs, C8H2 and larger C2nH2 have been identified. In addition the influence of acetone on the plasma products is investigated, as acetone is an often-used solvent for acetylene in gas bottles. This work has been supported by GRK 1051.
