3D–Particle Tracking in Dusty Plasmas with a 3–Camera System — •Stefan Frenzel, Matthias Heilfort, Sebastian Käding, Andre Melzer, and Bernd Pompe — Institute of Physics, University of Greifswald, Germany

We describe a 3–camera system and related software package to obtain 3D–trajectories of particles in a dusty plasma. The software works with a camera model that relates a 2D–point (center of a pixel cluster in a picture of one camera) to a 3D–line in the vicinity of which the illuminated particle lies. The camera model is specified from a calibration procedure. If N particles are detected in the pictures, we get a bundle of N 3D–lines for each of the three cameras. The lines of the three bundles are most close to each other at the 3D particle positions. A sofisticated algorithm is adopted to avoid mismatches of particle identification in the course of time. At present we are able to track 3D–trajectories of up to 100 particle with good reliability. The algorithm is rather fast and would enable on–line tracking, provided the read–out of the movies from the cameras is fast enough.
