Spatially resolved measurement of surface charges in a dielectric barrier discharge exhibiting self organised structures — •Lars Stollenwerk, Johannes Georg Laven, and Hans-Georg Purwins — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Corrensstraße 2/4, 48149 Münster

In this work a dielectric barrier gas discharge system consisting of a narrow discharge gap filled with helium between large area electrodes is regarded. The discharge operates in the glow mode and exhibits due to the large aspect ratio a laterally structured current density distribution. To measure spatially resolved the emerging surface charges on the dielectrics a BSO-crystal is used as dielectric barrier. Via the Pockels-effect the polarisation of an incident light beam is modulated, hence the surface charge distribution can be measured in the running discharge. At the same time the lateral luminescence radiation density in the discharge is observed. Some characteristic quantities in a filamentary discharge like the filament diameter in the luminescence distribution and in the positive and negative surface charge distribution are determined, as well as the transferred charge per filament.
