Experiments with ultracold
fermionic atoms in the vicinity of a magnetic Feshbach resonance
recently entered the crossover regime between Bose-Einstein
condensation (BEC) and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluidity
(BCS). The long lifetime of pairs of two fermionic atoms makes such
a system ideal for experimental studies. We present precision
experiments of collective oscillations and provide detailed
quantitative insights into this BEC-BCS crossover regime1. At
any point in the crossover regime the equation of state and the
density dependence of the chemical potential of the system can be
determined by measuring the normalized frequencies of compression
modes. Our measurements are in agreement with a quantum Monte Carlo
simulation including hydrodynamic theory in the local density
approximation and rule out simple mean-field BCS
approaches.
