Quality Characteristics of Laser Optics — •Kai Starke, Holger Blaschke, Lars Jensen, Marco Jupé, Puja Kadkhoda, Heinrich Mädebach, and Detlev Ristau — Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V., Hollerithallee 8, 30419 Hannover
The characterization of high performance dielectric coatings concerning optical losses, spectral characteristics and durability is a prerequisite for new applications in the strongly evolving area of laser development and materials processing. For a successful implementation of leading edge optical coatings in laser systems, the quality specifications stated by the manufacturers has to be evaluated by precise and reliable measurements. For this purpose, standard measurement procedures have been elaborated by the International Standardization Working Groups. In the present publication, the most important test procedures for measuring reflectance/transmittance, absorptance, scattering and laser-induced damage will be presented. The explanations will include also test results for typical optical coatings for different manufacturing procedures and spectral regions. Furthermore, the influence of pulse duration on the laser-induced damage will be analyzed referring to the underlying damage mechanisms. The damage resistance of high performance coatings for nanosecond and femtosecond pulses will be especially considered.
