A relativistic nuclear energy density functional, based on chiral dynamics and the symmetry breaking pattern of low-energy QCD, is presented and applied to the description of ground-state properties and collective excitations, in particular Gamow-Teller and IAS resonances. The results are at the same level of quantitative comparison with data as the best phenomenological relativistic mean-field models.
