The intention of the neutron decay spectrometer aSPECT is the measurement of the proton spectrum in the decay of free neutrons. The proton spectrum is used to deduce the value of the neutrino electron correlation coefficient a, an important experimental quantity which is useful to resolve the problem with the unitarity of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Matrix.

In a beam time in 2005/ 2006 at the neutron beam MEPHISTO of the research reactor "Forschungsneutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz" (FRM-II), first proton spectra have been measured and several systematic tests were performed. In my talk, I will present the physical motivation and the design of our spectrometer, but mainly I will discuss our latest results and the on-going optimizations for the next beam time.
