For the first time the orbital electron-capture decay of a hydrogen-like ion has been measured, at the example of 140Pr58+ which decays by a Gamow-Teller transition to the g.s. of bare 140Ce58+. For this purpose, H-like 140Pr58+ ions were produced by in-flight fragmentation in the FRS at GSI, injected into the ion-storage ring ESR. The number of both mother- and daughter ions could be monitored as a function of time by means of Schottky Mass Spectrometry. This allowed to determine the EC decay-constant λEC as well as λβ+. The EC decay constant of the H-like ions turns out to be by a factor 1.22 larger than for the neutral atom. Moreover, the total decay probability (λEC+λβ+) of H-like 140Pr is larger than the corresponding one of neutral 140Pr. This rather unexpected result can be fully understood by taking into account the spin coupling of the nucleus as well as of the leptons involved and the conservation of the total angular momentum in EC-decay.
