To explain the phenomena of special relativity we have learned to use Einstein`s concept of space and time. However, there is - also historically - an alternative way which yields exactly the same results, but is much easier to comprehend and which has a direct physical explanation.
Hendrik Lorentz has shown us in the year 1892, that electric fields necessarily contract at motion. This insight can be generalized. As all objects in our physical world are shaped by fields, any observable contraction can be explained in this way.
Furthermore, Erwin Schrödinger has shown in 1930 that there is a permanent oscillation at the speed of light `c` within an electron (`zitterbewegung`); a fact which can now be extended to quarks. This fact explains directly the phenomenon of dilation, because a system oscillating at a specific constant speed will, when moving, extend its oscillation period in order to maintain that speed. And as this oscillation is the basis for all oscillations in matter and so for all time-related processes in physics, this explains dilation in general.
If the detection of Schrödinger is complemented to the `Basic Particle Model`, we understand the origin of mass without the need of a Higgs field. This approach also explains the relativistic increase of mass at motion and as a consequence Einstein`s famous relation between mass and energy.
