Metric Renormalization in General Relativity — •Juliane Behrend1, Otto Nachtmann1, and Thomas Richter2 — 1Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Heidelberg — 2Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
A correct description of the average dynamics of matter inhomogeneities in the framework of general relativity requires a macroscopic form of Einstein's equation, which is derived from the exact equation by averaging. In order to keep the physical content of the solution, such an averaging process has to be generally covariant. We present a suitable process for the metric which includes renormalization (rescaling of the metric) and visualize it on the example of a perturbed two sphere. This involves the numerical solution of a partial differential equation by the aid of the simulation toolkit Gascoigne. The results are discussed particularly with regard to their possible cosmic relevance.
