Rare decays of B and K mesons are highly suppressed in the standard model and therefore sensitive to new physics at or above the electroweak scale. I review the theory status of the decays B → X_s γ, B → X_s l⁺ l⁻, B → l⁺ l⁻, K → π ν ν, and K → π l⁺ l⁻ and discuss how they constrain extensions of the standard model.
