Prospects of searches for photons above 1019 eV with the Pierre Auger Observatory* — •Markus Risse for the Pierre Auger collaboration — Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Fachbereich Physik, Gaußstr. 20, D-42097 Wuppertal
The observation of ultra-high energy (UHE) photons above 1019 eV would open a new window of cosmic-ray research. In this talk, motivation and status of UHE photon searches are briefly reviewed. An estimtate of the sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory to photons is given. If complemented by a large northern site, the Auger Observatory has a unique potential to detect such photons even when assuming conservative flux models. Possible implications of the (non-) observation of UHE photons are discussed.
