Enhancements of the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina — •Hans-Otto Klages for the Pierre Auger collaboration — Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Institut für Kernphysik, Postfach 3640, 76121 Karlsruhe
The southern experiment of the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) is at present nearing completion in the province of Mendoza, Argentina. The experiment is continuously taking air shower data at the highest energies since early 2004. The energy threshold of the large surface array of particle detectors for high quality data is log E[eV] = 18.5. The Auger fluorescence telescopes enable high accuracy hybrid event reconstruction down to about log E[eV] = 17.7. The Pierre Auger Collaboration intends to further expand the energy range of the southern experiment to approximately log E[eV] = 17.0 by three additional fluorescence telescopes with elevated field of view (HEAT) in combination with a 25 sqkm infill detector array with 4-fold sampling density and additional large area muon detection capability (AMIGA). These enhancements will enable the southern PAO to cover the energy range of interest for the transition from galactic to extragalactic cosmic rays as well as the domain of highest energy in one common experiment with excellent energy and mass resolution. Auger South will finally have a broad overlap with the KASCADE Grande data range.
