Characterization of the Proton Source in the Frictional Cooling Demonstration Experiment — •Daniel Greenwald, Daniel Kollár, and Allen Caldwell — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, München
Frictional cooling is one of the schemes being studied for use in a muon collider. The Frictional Cooling Experiment (FCD) at the MPI for Physics in Munich aims to demonstrate the principle of frictional cooling on protons. In the FCD experiment protons are accelerated by a constant electric field through a retarding medium---a cell filled with Helium gas---bringing them to an equilibrium energy. The protons are produced at rest inside the gas cell by an alpha emitter in a special holder equipped with a window made of a hydrogen-rich foil.
A brief introduction to frictional cooling and a characterization of the proton source used in the experiment will be presented.
