The Pierre Auger Observatory has almost completed the construction phase in the southern site, with 24 fluorescence telescopes and more than 1000 water Cherenkov tanks deployed and fully operational.
The statistics of extremely high energy events is rapidly increasing, moreover the high quality of the hybrid data minimizes the uncertainties in the geometry and energy reconstruction.
By observing the shower longitudinal development and precisely locating the depth of shower maximum, hints on the nature of the primary cosmic particles can be given. In particular the search for photon-initiated showers in the collected data sample is considered and presented in this study.
