Investigation of the S(500) distribution for air showers detected with the KASCADE-Grande array — •Gabriel Toma for the KASCADE-Grande collaboration — Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Institute für Kernphysik, Karlsruhe, Germany — on leave from the National Institute for Physics an Nuclear Engineering, Bucharest, Romania
The lateral density distribution of charged particles in extensive air showers (EAS) is an important observable providing significant information about the energy and type of the primary particle. Particularly of lateral particle density at the distance of about 500 m from shower core, S(500), has been shown by detailed simulations to be an energy identifier, being nearly independent of the mass of the primary particle. We report here about studies of the S(500) observable of EAS registered with the KASCADE-Grande array installed at the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. Using a recently developed reconstruction program SHOWREC, the energy deposits of particles in detectors have been used to reconstruct the lateral energy distribution of the particles described by Linsley LDF. After fitting the charged particle density and after several cut the S(500) distribution of the data has been reconstructed and is compared with a power-law dependence.
