Track Based Alignment of the CMS Tracker — Gero Flucke, Robert Klanner, Peter Schleper, Georg Steinbrück, and •Markus Stoye — Institut für Experimentalphysik, Universität Hamburg
The alignment of the CMS tracker is a demanding task due to the unique size and complexity of the silicon sensor based tracker. The positions and orientations of ∼ 20k silicon sensors needs to be determined. A new version of the well established alignment algorithm MILLEPEDE (used by H1, ZEUS and others) is tested, which potentially will be able to cope with O(100K) alignment parameters. Using this version of MILLEPEDE, alignment studies are performed. The impact of datasets, such as Z0→ µµ and cosmics are studied. Constraints on the Z0 mass and constraints due to the initial precision knowledge are also applied for this study. The results show the capability and limits of the track based alignment procedure.
